College Football Rankings: CFB Playoff Predictions Week 7

We are still weeks away from the first unveiling of this year’s College Football Playoff rankings. Heavy has put together the rankings we think we would see if the rankings were released today. While the committee overall values similar things each year, there seems to be a particular area of focus when the rankings are released.

It can range from strength of schedule to the best teams each squad has beaten. It will be interesting to see what the committee will emphasize this year.

What has been clear is Alabama and Clemson are considered the top two teams. There does not appear to be a major difference between the two teams. We gave the edge to Clemson because their schedule has had a bit more quality opponents than Alabama. Week 6 proved to be one of the more chaotic weeks we have seen.

Oklahoma and Michigan were both upset by unranked opponents. It will be worth watching what the committee does with one-loss teams. We have USC ranked a little higher than they are in the standard AP poll simply because of the difficult schedule they have faced so far this season.

As you get towards the bottom of the rankings, three solid teams appear to be fighting to be the top Group of Five team. Two AAC rivals, UCF and USF, appear to be the class of the conference. Both teams have emerged as early favorites to head to a New Year’s Six bowl. San Diego State is also fighting the two Florida teams for this honor.

While the actual College Football Playoff rankings do not begin to be unveiled until Halloween night, let’s take a look at what we think the current rankings would look like.

LHSAA state football finals, semifinals: Previews and Predictions

Two local teams already have punched their tickets to the Dome on Friday, and they just happen to know just a little bit about one another. In the second of four games, top-seeded Riverside will take on third-seeded St. Charles in the Division II championship. Five other local teams will play in the state semifinals in the Non-Select bracket, including two of three games that pit local teams against one another.

Here, we preview the games and present sports writer Jim Derry’s picks for Friday’s action.

On air: This game will be broadcast live on NOLA.com with Jim Derry handling play-by-play and Hahnville coach Nick Saltaformaggio presenting color and analysis.

When/where: Friday at Destrehan, 7 p.m.

The road to the semifinals: Destrehan defeated Terrebonne, 47-7, in the first round, Mandeville, 37-36, in the second round and Ehret, 21-14, in the quarterfinals; Landry-Walker defeated Fontainebleau, 55-23, in the first round, Sulphur, 50-24 in the second round and Parkway, 61-21, in the quarterfinals.

Playoff wins since 2013: Destrehan 12, Landry-Walker 9.

State championships: Destrehan has four titles (1949, 1973, 2007, 2008); Landry-Walker has not won a state title, although Landry won two titles (1942, 1965) long before merging with O. Perry Walker.

Series record the past 10 years: These teams have never met, although Destrehan defeated O. Perry Walker, 48-28, in September 2006.

Next week: The winner will face the Zachary-West Monroe winner in the Class 5A championship game next Saturday (Dec. 10) in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome at 7 p.m.

In what could be the most explosive game of the entire playoffs, two offenses that pack a punch come together for the right to head to the Dome and compete for the Class 5A state football championship.

So what’s the biggest criteria for picking a winner here? Is it experience? That would go to Destrehan, whose senior class enters having lost just three games in three years – all in the playoffs, including to Acadiana in the state title game two seasons ago.

Is it talent? That unquestionably goes to Landry-Walker, which has the most athletic player in the state at quarterback in Keytaon Thompson, along with dynamic threat and West Virginia commit, Tevin Bush.

Or is it my rotund gut, which has served me well this season in picking the tough ones.

I think I’ll go with a combination of the latter two.

When/where: Friday at Behrman Stadium, 7 p.m.

The road to the quarterfinals: Karr defeated Pearl River, 62-7, in the first round, Leesville, 55-0, in the second round and Benton, 59-13, in the quarterfinals; McDonogh 35 defeated Grant, 36-8, in the first round, North DeSoto, 38-8, in the second round and Plaquemine, 26-25, in the quarterfinals.

Playoff wins since 2013: Karr 12, McDonogh 35 5.

State championships: Karr has won two titles (1992, 2012); McDonogh 35 has never won a state title.

Series record the past 10 years: Karr leads the series, 10-1, with the Roneagles only win coming, 21-6, in 2009. The Cougars won the only playoff matchup over this timeframe, 19-8, in 2010.

Next week: The winner will face the Neville-Warren Easton winner in the Class 4A championship game next Saturday (Dec. 10) in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome at 3:30 p.m.

(Audio highlights from Karr-35 in Week 10)

What more do you need to know than the fact Karr has scored 50 or more points in 10 straight games and 55 or more in nine out of 10? Oh that, and they defeated the Roneagles mighty easily in Week 10, 56-12.

This one should be closer, but I still think the Cougars are the best team in the state, and they’ll get a chance to prove that next week in the Superdome.

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The controversial split of high school football in Louisiana has been altered before it's first season in effect.

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association's Executive Committee decided to change the format of the association's football playoffs.

In January, the LHSAA decided to split so-called select and non-select schools into different divisions for football state championships.

Under Proposition 18, select schools (which include private, magnet, and some charter schools) would have competed under new divisions, separate from non-select schools' (which are traditional public schools) traditional classifications of 1A through 5A.

Today, the LHSAA Executive Committee voted in favor of a motion that would further divide select schools into four divisions. Meaning Louisiana will now have nine state championship games, instead of the traditional five.

The rule changes do no affect the regular season, and go into effect in the 2013 season.

The LHSAA hopes to continue to play all state championships in the Superdome.
