User login Navigation Cribbage flush

A flush in cribbage is 4 or more cards all of the same suit (for example, four diamonds). If you hold 4 cards of the same suit in your hand, you score 4. If the turn-up card is also the same suit, you score 5.

However, in the crib, only a 5-card flush will count (the 4 cards in the crib and the turn-up card must all be the same suit).

If you only have 3 cards of

If you only have 3 cards of the same suit in your hand, can the turn card count as your fourth since it is your extra card and you only need 4 in you hand?

5 card flush which includes The Nob

If you hold a flush which includes The Nob in your hand and the turn card is the same suit, do you count 5 for the flush + 1 for The Nob? Or is it only a 5 count?

Flush Scoring with a Nob

You would score your two points for flipping the jack at the beginning of the round. Then when tallying your hand you would count count it as part of the flush, thus the flush for five.

On a similar note, if you have a Jack in your hand the same as the other three cards and the cut card completes the flush for five, then you also score an additional 1 for having the "right Jack." "A flush for 5 and the right Jack makes 6"

Can you flush in play if 4 or

Can you flush in play if 4 or 5 players lay the same suite in a row?

Flushes are NOT counted while pegging (laying cards to 31). They are only counted in hands after pegging.

I've never understood why it isn't the reverse.

You get to pick the four cards you keep, while only two are your choice for the crib. Guess it's just one of those things.

Summary Score Commands - Gnus Manual

flush score

The score commands that alter score entries do not actually modify real score files. That would be too inefficient. Gnus maintains a cache of previously loaded score files, one of which is considered the current score file alist . The score commands simply insert entries into this list, and upon group exit, this list is saved.

The current score file is by default the group's local score file, even if no such score file actually exists. To insert score commands into some other score file (e.g., all.SCORE ), you must first make this score file the current one.

General score commands that don't actually change the score file: V s Set the score of the current article ( gnus-summary-set-score ).

V S Display the score of the current article ( gnus-summary-current-score ).

V t Display all score rules that have been used on the current article ( gnus-score-find-trace ). In the *Score Trace* buffer, you may type e to edit score file corresponding to the score rule on current line and f to format ( gnus-score-pretty-print ) the score file and edit it.

V w List words used in scoring ( gnus-score-find-favourite-words ).

V R Run the current summary through the scoring process ( gnus-summary-rescore ). This might be useful if you're playing around with your score files behind Gnus' back and want to see the effect you're having.

V c Make a different score file the current ( gnus-score-change-score-file ).

V e Edit the current score file ( gnus-score-edit-current-scores ). You will be popped into a gnus-score-mode buffer (see Score File Editing).

V f Edit a score file and make this score file the current one ( gnus-score-edit-file ).

V F Flush the score cache ( gnus-score-flush-cache ). This is useful after editing score files.

V C Customize a score file in a visually pleasing manner ( gnus-score-customize ).

The rest of these commands modify the local score file. V m Prompt for a score, and mark all articles with a score below this as read ( gnus-score-set-mark-below ).

V x Prompt for a score, and add a score rule to the current score file to expunge all articles below this score ( gnus-score-set-expunge-below ).

The keystrokes for actually making score entries follow a very regular pattern, so there's no need to list all the commands. (Hundreds of them.)

  1. The first key is either I (upper case i) for increasing the score or L for lowering the score.
  2. The second key says what header you want to score on. The following keys are available: a Score on the author name.

s Score on the subject line.

x Score on the Xref line—i.e., the cross-posting line.

r Score on the References line.

d Score on the date.

l Score on the number of lines.

i Score on the Message-ID header.

e Score on an “extra” header, that is, one of those in gnus-extra-headers, if your NNTP server tracks additional header data in overviews.

f Score on followups—this matches the author name, and adds scores to the followups to this author. (Using this key leads to the creation of ADAPT files.)

b Score on the body.

h Score on the head.

t Score on thread. (Using this key leads to the creation of ADAPT files.)

  • The third key is the match type. Which match types are valid depends on what headers you are scoring on. strings e Exact matching.

    s Substring matching.

    r Regexp matching

    date b Before date.

    number < Less than number.

    = Equal to number.

    > Greater than number.

  • The fourth and usually final key says whether this is a temporary (i.e., expiring) score entry, or a permanent (i.e., non-expiring) score entry, or whether it is to be done immediately, without adding to the score file. t Temporary score entry.

    p Permanent score entry.

    i Immediately scoring.

  • If you are scoring on ‘ e ’ (extra) headers, you will then be prompted for the header name on which you wish to score. This must be a header named in gnus-extra-headers, and ‘ TAB ’ completion is available.
  • So, let's say you want to increase the score on the current author with exact matching permanently: I a e p . If you want to lower the score based on the subject line, using substring matching, and make a temporary score entry: L s s t . Pretty easy.

To make things a bit more complicated, there are shortcuts. If you use a capital letter on either the second or third keys, Gnus will use defaults for the remaining one or two keystrokes. The defaults are “substring” and “temporary”. So I A is the same as I a s t , and I a R is the same as I a r t .

These functions take both the numerical prefix and the symbolic prefix (see Symbolic Prefixes). A numerical prefix says how much to lower (or increase) the score of the article. A symbolic prefix of a says to use the all.SCORE file for the command instead of the current score file.

The gnus-score-mimic-keymap says whether these commands will pretend they are keymaps or not.

How to Flush Apache s Cache

    How to Flush Apache's Cache

If you configure and enable caching on an Apache Web server, you can use an Apache utility to flush or clean the cache. To completely flush the cache, you must stop the Web server, run the utility and then restart the Web server. Alternatively, you can schedule the utility to run on a periodic basis to keep the cache clean. You might have to experiment to determine the best interval to use for cleaning based on how long it takes to run the utility and the typical size of the cache.

    Flushing the Cache

Select a time when you can stop the Apache Web server to flush the cache. Configure your load balancer, proxy or other server to serve Web pages while the server is down or to notify users that the server is down for maintenance.

Open a terminal session as the root user. Stop the Apache server by typing one of the following commands and pressing "Enter:"

/etc/init.d/apache2 stop -- Debian or Ubuntu apachectl -k graceful-stop -- RHEL, CentOS or Fedora httpd.exe -k stop -n "ServiceName" -- Windows, where "ServiceName" is the name of the Apache service

Type "htcacheclean -r" (without the quotation marks) and press "Enter" to launch the cache cleaning utility, perform a thorough cleaning and delete subdirectories during the cleaning process.

Restart Apache when the utility finishes using one of the following commands:

/etc/init.d/apache2 start -- Debian or Ubuntu apachectl start -- RHEL, CentOS or Fedora httpd.exe -k install -n "ServiceName" -- Windows, where "ServiceName" is the name you assign to the Apache service

Reconfigure your load balancer, proxy or other server to route requests to the server.

    Periodically Cleaning the Cache

Determine the cleaning interval in minutes. For example, to launch the cleaning utility every hour, the interval would be 60 minutes.

Open a terminal session as the root user. Type"htcacheclean -d60 -n -t" (without the quotation marks) and press "Enter" to launch and schedule the cleaning utility. Replace "60" with the number of minutes you selected for the cleaning interval. Omit the "-n" flag if you don't want the cleaning utility to pause occasionally so it doesn't monopolize system resources.

Type "killall -9 htcacheclean" (without the quotation marks) to stop the daemon in Linux or type "net stop htcacheclean" (without the quotation marks) to stop the service in Windows.

The simplest algorithm for poker hand evaluation

I am thinking about poker hand (5 cards) evaluation in Java . Now I am looking for simplicity and clarity rather than performance and efficiency. I probably can write a "naive" algorithm but it requires a lot of code.

I saw also a few poker evaluation libraries, which use hashing and bitwise operations, but they look rather complex.

What is the "cleanest and simplest" algorithm for poker hand evaluation ?

Here is a very short but complete histogram based 5 card poker scoring function in Python (2.x). It will get considerably longer if converted to Java.

Lookup tables are the most straightforward and simplest solution to the problem, and also the fastest. The trick is managing the size of the table and keeping the mode of use simple enough to process very quickly (space–time tradeoff). Obviously, in theory you could just encode each hand that could be held and have an array of evaluations, then --poof-- one table lookup and you are done. Unfortunately, such a table would be huge and unmanageable for most machines, and would invariably have you thrashing disks anyway as memory gets swapped out lots.

The so-called two-plus-two solution sports a big 10M table, but literally involves one table lookup for each card in the hand. You are not likely to find a faster and simpler to understand algorithm.

Other solutions involve more compressed tables with more complex indexing, but they are readily comprehensible and pretty fast (although much slower than 2+2). This is where you see language concerning hashing and so forth -- tricks to reduce a table size to more manageable sizes.

In any case, lookup solutions are orders of magnitude faster than the histogram-sort-dance-on-your-head-compare-special-case-and-by-the-way-was-it-a-flush solutions, almost none of which are worthy of a second glance.

Here's a naive approach to five-card hand comparison that I'm using to help initially populate a lookup table:

Instead of being as terse as possible, I prioritized type safety and clear, self-documenting code. If you're not familiar with the Guava types I'm using, you can browse their documentation.

And I'll include the code here (minus static imports for the enum constants at the bottom), although it's really too long to comfortably view in an answer.

Here's a modified version of dansalmo's program which works for holdem hands:

holdem() returns a list of indices of the winning hand(s). In the test() example that's [1, 3, 6], since the three hands with aces split the pot, or [8] if the flush hand is uncommented.

(This one is actually written in JavaScript, but you can evaluate JavaScript from Java if needed, so it shouldn't be a problem. Also, this is as short as it gets, so if even for illustration of the approach. ):

First you split your cards into two arrays: ranks (cs) and suits (ss) and to represent suits, you will use either 1,2,4 or 8 (that is 0b0001, 0b0010. ):

    Now here's the magic:

Now what it does (very briefly) is that it puts 1 into 3rd bit of s when there's a 2, into 4th when there's 3, etc., so for the above example s looks like this:

for [A,2,3,4,5] it would look like this

v uses four bits to record multiple occurencies of same card, so it's 52bits long and if you have three Aces and two kings, its 8 MSB bits look like:

The last line then checks for a flush or straight flush or royal flush (0x7c00).

If you are representing a hand as an array of, for example, Card objects, then I would have methods for looping through this array and determining if it has a 2-of-a-kind, flush etc - and if it does, what type it is; so you could have the 3ofaKind() method return 5 if a hand had three 5s. Then I would establish a hierarchy of possibilities (e.g. 3 of a kind is higher than 2 of a kind) and work from there. The methods themselves should be pretty straightforward to write.

If you just want to understand how it works here is simple algorithm:

It is from "ALGORITHMS AND ASSESSMENT IN COMPUTER POKER" by Darse Billings.
