Best of Bundesliga: Has Jupp Heynckes returned to a title race?

Bayern hammered Freiburg 5-0 and then watched RB Leipzig beat BVB as the 2017-18 Bundesliga season starts to hot up. All you need to from Matchday 8 right here.

Jupp, Jupp! Five of the best for Heynckes

Everything you need to know about Matchday 8 in the Bundesliga.

Good week for: Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, Lars Stindl, Bruma

Bad week for: Borussia Dortmund, Cologne (again), Hamburg (again)

- Jupp Heynckes returned to the Bayern Munich bench for his fourth debut and saw his team hammer hapless Freiburg 5-0. Even though the 72-year-old only had a few days to get his message across, Bayern looked a new team. Heynckes fielded a mixture of experience and youth represented best by Arjen Robben and Kingsley Coman on either wing and Bayern never looked back. The Bavarians are just two points behind Dortmund now.

- Despite a goal difference of +19, there was a lingering suspicion that Borussia Dortmund could struggle against higher quality sides after being exposed by Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid in the Champions League. And so it proved against RB Leipzig. In a dramatic, offensive game which saw both teams reduced to ten men, it was last season's runners-up who prevailed 3-2, posing the question: could we have a three-way title race?

- Borussia Dortmund supporters again protested against the very presence of RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga – a club who many fans still consider to embody the perceived over-commercialization of the game. An estimated 4,500 fans took part in a pre-match march which, according to local police, took place peacefully. On the Yellow Wall, which was closed for one game following the violent scenes which marred season's meeting between the two sides, a large banner read: "The Wall of Disgrace greets the Disgrace of the League."

- Struggling Cologne were once again left to rue missed chances and VAR decisions as they crashed to a seventh defeat in eight away at Stuttgart on Friday night. After Dominique Heintz's stunning equalizer, Cologne thought they had been awarded a late penalty following a foul on Jhon Cordoba, only for the video assistant referee to overrule the decision after a long delay. As if to rub salt into the wounds, Chadrac Akolo then scored a last-minute winner for Stuttgart. Cologne have now made the worst start (one point from the first eight games, -14 goal difference) in Bundesliga history.

- Not only was Matchday 8 the goal-richest (33) of the season so far, it was also notable for teams simply refusing to give in. Ausgburg and Wolfsburg both came from behind twice away at Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen respectively to salvage impressive 2-2 draws. Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt refused to give in after Hannover equalized, going on to win their game late thanks to French striker Sebastian Haller's third goal of the season.

- Lars Stindl demonstrated his immense quality again with a stunning goal to set Borussia Mönchengladbach on their way to a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen. Stindl turned Daniel Bauer inside-out in the box before firing past Jiri Pavlenka from a tight angle. The victory put the Foals up to fifth.

- Jakub Blaszczykowski scored his first Wolfsburg goal in his 35th game for the club. Kuba's last Bundesliga goal came 1,450 days ago when he scored for BVB against Schalke.

Cologne coach Peter Stöger has no more words for VAR after another decision goes against his team.

Cologne's Jörg Schmadtke (l) and Peter Stöger (r)

"In the past, players would look at the pitch whenever they miscontrolled it. But you can't use that excuse nowadays; the pitches are too good. Instead, they say: 'I had the wrong porridge this morning and it affected my lactose intolerance.'"

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Völler has no time for modern players' excuses.

"We were absolutely oustanding today. We played the perfect away game."

Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl was very happy with Gladbach's away win.

Bayern Munich will be without Javi Martinez for the trip to Celtic in the Champions League after the Spanish defender suffered a shoulder injury against Freiburg. How long he will be out for remains unknown but Martinez's Twitter post can give Bayern fans hope.

Hamburg youngster Tatsuya Ito has impressed on his first two starts against Werder Bremen and Mainz but the Japanese winger had to be substituted shortly after halftime in both games after suffering from cramp. Now, captain and countryman Gotoku Sakai has criticized his physical condition, saying: "He's only young but it doesn't help us when he can only play 55 minutes. That's not Bundesliga level."

Hertha Berlin launched an international debate after their players "took a knee" ahead of their game against Schalke on Saturday in a show of solidarity with athletes in the United States who have been protesting against discrimination.

Critics denounced the decision as a PR stunt aimed at attracting attention and marketing the club in the United States, but Hertha insist the idea came from the players themselves. CEO Michael Preetz said: "We are against any form of discrimination and against racism. We are Berlin. We are a cosmopolitan city and we stand for diversity. The team wanted to document that today."

Mauro Icardi hat-trick, Milan Derby, Serie A results, Bundesliga results, Ligue 1 results, Perth Now

Eurobeat: Mauro Icardi leads Inter Milan to derby victory, Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga struggles continue

MAURO Icardi was the hero for Inter Milan in a fiery derby, but two other Serie A clubs fell off the pace.

Plus the latest results from the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 in Eurobeat.

MAURO Icardi scored a hat-trick as Inter Milan kept pace with leaders Napoli with a 3-2 defeat of city rivals AC Milan in a fiery Serie A derby clash on Sunday.

Inter skipper Icardi sealed victory from the spot in the final minute in front of 80,000 spectators at the San Siro to complete his hat-trick after also scoring on 28 and 63 minutes.

Spanish forward Suso (36) and Giacomo Bonaventura (81) had twice put AC Milan back on level terms in the ‘Chinese’ derby between two clubs fuelled by multi-million dollar investments by their Asian owners.

With Juventus losing 1-0 to Roma on Saturday, Luciano Spalletti’s Inter are now alone in second place, within two points of Napoli who they face next weekend.

“Scoring three goals in a derby is something special,” said Icardi.

“The important thing is that Inter won. It’s too early to talk about a Scudetto challenge,” he continued.

“We are doing things the right way from pre-season and now we have to think about the next match against a great opponent like Napoli.

“It’s a special match for me, because they are the leaders and play the best football in Europe.” Napoli maintained their perfect run of eight wins from eight games with Lorenzo Insigne scoring the only goal in a victory over Roma.

Juventus are third after Ciro Immobile’s second-half brace for Lazio condemned the reigning champions to a 2-1 defeat, their first at home in over two years.

Lazio are fourth equal on 19 points with Juventus with Roma four points adrift in fifth.

AC Milan dropped to tenth place after their fourth defeat piled the pressure on coach Vincenzo Montella.

“Looking at the table right now, everything might seem out of reach, but the season is very long and we can make up ground,” insisted Montella.

“This squad has quality, despite what some might say, and I thought even a draw would have been hard on us today considering all the chances created.

“I think a top four finish is absolutely possible.”

In a tense first half in the Derby della Madonnina, the first chance came after quarter of an hour when Antonio Candreva hit the crossbar.

Both Suso and a Joao Miranda header went wide, but Inter took the lead with Icardi picking up a Candreva cross on 28 minutes.

Patrick Cutrone came on after the break and lifted Milan who got back into the game thanks to a beautiful curling Suso effort.

But Icardi restored Inter’s advantage from an Ivan Perisic cross before Bonaventura slid in to make it 2-2 with Samir Handanovic unable to clear.

Ricardo Rodriguez brought down Danilo D’Ambrosio and 24-year-old Icardi converted to earn the praise of Spalletti.

“He (Icardi) has strength, dynamism, technique. He is an all-around player, who for his age knows how to shoulder responsibility,” said the Inter coach.

Earlier, Torino lost ground on the Serie A leaders after a 2-2 draw at Crotone as Atalanta also slipped up with a 3-1 defeat at Sampdoria.

Bryan Cristante opened with a 21st-minute goal in Genoa only for Giampiero Gasperini’s side to concede three in a 12-minute second half spree for Sampdoria.

Duvan Zapata got the equaliser on 56 minutes with Gianluca Caprari pulling the Genoa outfit ahead three minutes later and Karol Linetty sealing victory on 65 minutes.

Sampdoria move up to sixth place with the side from Bergamo now in 12th. Torino settled for a point at Crotone with Lorenzo De Silvestri nodding in the equaliser two minutes into injury time.

Torino are now eighth, with Bologna moving just ahead with a 2-1 derby win over SPAL.

French striker Cyril Thereau scored in either half to get Fiorentina back to winning ways with a 2-1 success over his former club Udinese.

It was a third win of the season for Fiorentina who have suffered four defeats and move to 11th two places ahead of Udinese.

BAYER Leverkusen’s poor start to the Bundesliga season continued on Sunday, as they twice threw away a lead to draw 2-2 with Wolfsburg.

Dominant in the opening half an hour, Leverkusen finally broke the deadlock on 29 minutes. Lars Bender fired the ball in from close range to score his first goal since April 2016.

The goal seemed to galvanise Wolfsburg. After a flurry of chances just before half time, Liverpool loanee Divock Origi eventually headed the visitors level on 44 minutes.

Lucas Alario restored the lead for Leverkusen on the hour mark, but Wolfsburg were level again within 10 minutes.

Daniel Didavi came off the bench to set up Jakub Blaszczykowski, who slotted the ball past Bernd Leno.

The draw extended Wolfsburg’s winless streak to six games, but coach Martin Schmidt was positive about his side’s performance.

“It was a good point to win,” said Schmidt.

“After the last game, I felt that we had lost two points, today I feel we have won one.”

Werder Bremen are still searching for their first win of the season after suffering a 2-0 defeat at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Gladbach had the lion’s share of the chances in the first half, and were rewarded on 27 minutes when Lars Stindl curled the ball around Jiri Pavlenka to open the scoring.

Just six minutes later, former Bremen man Jannik Vestergaard doubled the lead with a powerful header.

Further chances followed in the second half, as Thorgan Hazard was denied by Pavlenka and Stindl hit the post late on. Bremen held firm to limit the damage, but were treated to boos and whistles from the home support at full time nonetheless.

“We are just as frustrated as the fans are,” said Bremen left-back Ludwig Augustinsson.

Alexander Nouri’s team have not scored a goal in their last 304 minutes of Bundesliga football, and their attacking troubles were on full view on Sunday.

The result saw Bremen remain second from bottom, while Gladbach move up to fifth.

BORDEAUX and Nantes missed out on the chance to move into the top three of Ligue 1 after they played out a 1-1 draw.

Prejuce Nakoulma put Nantes, now unbeaten in their last seven matches, ahead on the stroke of halftime when he pounced on Leo Dubois’ blocked effort.

However, the hosts responded almost immediately after the break when Malcom fired in his fifth league strike of the season with 47 minutes gone.

Montpellier won 2-0 against a Nice side struggling to match the achievements of the last two seasons.

Stephane Sessegnon and substitute Isaac Mbenza scored superb long-range goals as the hosts, wearing a special pink kit in support of cancer charities, earned their third league win of the season.
